Case – BASF

To combat plastic waste in the environment, many brand-owners choose to move away from plastic packaging materials and use paper and board instead. This is, however, easier said than done, since paper has very poor barrier properties. Consequently, paper and board need special barrier coatings to protect the packaged product against e.g. water, oxygen and grease to ensure the same product quality and shelf-life as achieved with plastic packaging.

After an introduction on our products and their applications, students are challenged to come up with innovative approaches to successfully replace plastic packaging with paper and board. Not only technological routes, but also commercial and societal considerations will be considered in this case.
